Puppies, Birdies and Red Hot Pokers (Oh my!)

First things first.  Our latest puppy picture.  Our little guy is on the right.  His brother Jack on the left.

Yesterday a bird drama took place in our backyard.  A little baby birdie fell out of it's nest.  It's mama hung around, bringing it food to eat.

I couldn't see the nest so the kids and I made one using a plant hanger and old towels.  The little birdie didn't like this, he immediately climbed out - you can see him just to the left of the chains.  He hung around in the tree for a long time, his mama kept coming with food and I thought he might be safe up there.

This is why we were worried.  Our neighbor's cat Yoda.  He hangs around a lot.

I hoped the baby birdie would stay in the tree out of Yoda's reach.

The papa bird did not like seeing Yoda around.
He screeched and screeched at the cat but Yoda just ignored him.

The baby bird fell out of the tree and when I tried to pick him up again he buried himself amongst the succulent branches and I was afraid that trying to get him out would be too risky with his fragile little body.

While this drama played out I was drawing a clump of Kniphofia,
but it's much more fun to call them Red Hot Pokers.

I checked on the birdie in the evening but couldn't find him or his parents.  I went out again this morning and sadly found the evidence that he didn't survive the night.  Poor little thing.

Puppy Update

Puppy Update!

Here are pictures of our adorable Golden Retriever puppy taken yesterday at 22 days old.  So far the name that has stuck is Oberon.  I know, I know...I either hear instant approval or get strange looks and silence.  It's not your typical dog name.  Maybe best known as a character in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Oberon is also a major moon of the planet Uranus. My 9 year old son Max, slightly obsessed with astronomy, made a long list of celestial names and Oberon stood out.  He would be affectionately known as "Obi" aka "Obi Dog Kenobi."  Since puppy won't come home to us until July we still have plenty of time and I'm wondering if any fabulous Hawaiin names will reveal themselves to us while we are on vacation.

Feel free to make suggestions!

Puppies!

Those of you who have followed this blog know that we lost our Golden Retriever, Annie, back in January.  The kids started begging for a puppy immediately (even before Annie died, to be honest) but I thought we needed some time to mourn our Annie.  After Annie, who was huge by Golden standards, I wanted a smaller dog but one day I woke up knowing that I really wanted another Golden.  I started looking at breeders and rescue facilities knowing that the beginning of July is the perfect time for us to bring home a puppy.  After a couple of false starts, I saw a post on Facebook from a friend who was getting a Golden and there was one puppy left!  And since the pups were born May 7th, they will be ready to go home the first week of July!  It felt like it was meant to be.

On Mother's Day (after an awesome breakfast in bed!) we drove down to Los Angeles.  We visited the La Brea tar pits, had our first experience with LA food trucks and met our puppy.

Meet out new puppy - he's the one at the top with his face showing.  I have a feeling he will be making very regular appearances on this blog.

We can hardly wait until July and it gives us a good long time to mull over names...any suggestions?

Annie

Today we said goodbye to our beloved friend.  Annie was our first baby, a wedding present from B's aunt and uncle.  She loved the beach and chasing shore birds.  She loved her tennis balls and trying to catch gophers.  Most of all she loved us.  She was sweet and cheerful even in these last few weeks when her body was failing her.  We miss her already.

She loved the babies and the babies loved her.

We will never forget you, Annie.
