I tried something a little different this week. I gave myself one hour and only 4 colors while painting. This is a view of the sunset sky in Kauai. Painted from memory and my vacation photos. Normally when I paint California scenes I use Cerulean Blue, Hookers Green and Titanium White to create my water and sky. When I paint Kauai ocean and sky and I can't get the right colors using my "California palette." Here I used Cobalt Blue, Naphthol Crimson, Yellow Light Hansa and Titanium White. I was tempted to add something else...but I tend to over mix and use too many colors and end up with mud. I'm very open to constructive criticism and advise and tips. :)

ReplyDeleteso calming and serene. I adore your sky & ocean paintings.
ReplyDeleteNice colors; the blues fit right in with your nails! Happy PPF!
ReplyDeleteLove your color palette. What an amazing sky. There is something so magical about the Hawaiian sky. Just lovely and took me on a little vacation break! Happy PPF
ReplyDeleteBeautiful color! Lovely clouds. Nothing muddy about it!
ReplyDeleteAww, your poor nails! ;)
Beautiful colour palette to go with your gorgeous painting. Happy PPF, Annette x
ReplyDeleteThis looks so real, it's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh, no, poor nails! But they look like they have the clouds from your painting on them! I love your new color palette, too. The secret to "alla prima" painting (all at once) is to put on the top layer of very thick paint in whatever color you want. Do not mix it into the paint under it. Hold your brush sideways to the canvas and with a heavily loaded brush lay the new color lightly over the top...no mud!
ReplyDeleteI forgot! Also, after every single stroke, wipe off the paint on your brush with a paper towel so the next stroke is not polluted by the last touch and mix of colors already on the canvas!
ReplyDeleteThanks Gloria! I did wipe my brush and use paper towel (hence the paint all over my hands!) I love your tips...sometimes I do want to blend the colors and sometimes I don't so this is a great tip for when I don't!
Deletemais non, you enhanced your manicure! just put a few beauteous clouds in your OPI night sky!
ReplyDeletePerfect clouds. Love the color palette. I'm sending a link to your blog to an artist friend. she's headed to Kauai soon. I learned something from Gloria in your comment section.
ReplyDeleteThanks Faye! I have a ton of Kauai pics and art which she can find with a "search."
DeleteGorgeous cloudscape! Love that you limited yourself to one hour and 4 colors!

Rita this is really lovely... a limited palette really helps you learn what the colours do ... I use a limited palette as often as I can... love the light and textures in this...xx
ReplyDeleteClouds are hard! Yours are lovely! Great color and depth! A fan of the nail polish too:) Happy PPF Rita!
ReplyDeletewhat a beautiful cloud scape-really lovely!Happy PPF
ReplyDeleteGorgeous sky! I have the exact same colour of nailpolish on my toenails ☺
ReplyDeleteGreat these clouds, the work is very good. Saludos
ReplyDeleteits beautiful and well worth wrecking the mani!! Happy Paint Party Friday!
ReplyDeleteWell done with the limited palette! interesting that it needed different colors than the CA sky - very observant of you! Btw, your nails really fit the palette well;-)
ReplyDeleteYour clouds and the sky make me feel like painting a rainbow there :)
ReplyDeleteI think your clouds are great. Knowing that you needed to use different colors to achieve the effect you wanted is huge...something it takes most people years to learn.
ReplyDeleteLove it and the way you challenged yourself.
ReplyDeleteOh...check out that OPI blue...wow...and that sky...lovely!! Your fotos below look great too. Happy PPF to you!
ReplyDeletewow, i really like this, the colors are perfect!
ReplyDeleteFabulous clouds and sky! Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful sky and clouds....I have always feared painting them...I have to try the clouds!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by:)
Love your painting...and love yr work space in the livingroom....I have an entire studio and also end up painting in the livingroom..lol
ReplyDeleteI love the different shades you obtained through mixing your colors. I believe that paint on your hands gives you credibility as an artist. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteYour manicure looks so pretty with added colours lol. I find it so interesting that you need a different palette depending on where in the world you are painting. It's so easy to fall into a generic feeling of 'this is water' or this is sky'. Thank you for the insight.
ReplyDeleteHi Rita: Thank you for your comment last week on my new "diet"! I really like your painting alot! It is so tremendous...hard to believe you did this in 1 hour and with the limited colors. I would find that extremely difficult as mine take a day! I like you set yourself a limit...you seem like a "challenger." What a lovely quality for an artist to do this. And...I LOVE your nails. They look absolutely purposeful. I like them much better than the art thing people pay money for...the colors are sensational. THEY are ART!!!! Kisses, Samara
