I've been working on my first commission (and first sale!) It's quite a change for this late in life, self taught artist to paint something for any other reason than fun and personal fulfillment. I try not to remember my "customer" but it's hard not to get a little nervous wondering if the painting will live up to expectations.
This is where I am now (below.) I've added a lot more color and movement to the water. My worry now is that it is getting to far away from it's mate, they are intended to be hung together.
Besides the color variations (which is more subtle in person than in these pictures,) I worry that the water looks flat in the other painting now...but I hesitate to go back and mess with it.
What do you think?
Is it OK if they are not matchy/matchy. I wasn't given any direction but they will hang together so I want a cohesive look. Is it enough that they are tied together because they are two ocean paintings?

I don't think it should matter if they 'match'. Your style will be the thing that makes them cohesive. I like that one is bright and sunny and the other now looks darker and slightly stormy.
ReplyDeleteThanks Nic. The sunset painting is from a day when there were clouds in the sky so it was darker and I like the moody feel of it in it's darker state.
DeleteI love them both and your painting really makes me want to go to the beach. So beautiful. HPPF!
ReplyDeletelove these peaceful paintings..great happy ppf
ReplyDeleteI think both of them are great, I certainly wouldn't mess with the beach one to match it. The beach looks as if t is painted in the early morning light, the other near sunset, two periods in the same day... thats matching enough, Happy PPF
ReplyDeleteYou are right, they are differnt times of day so the light very different...thanks for your feedback!
DeleteJust looks like one is a day with more wind and waves with a possible storm brewing, the other is a peaceful quiet sunny calm day!! Both gorgeous!! Different ends of the spectrum! They could be called calm before the storm!

Your unique style will shine through whatever you paint. I don't think they need to be a perfect match at all for them to work together. Congratulations on your sale:) HPPF
ReplyDeleteWhat Giggles is saying is exactly what I wanted to say: the sea looks different every day depending on the weather, so I think they match beautifully.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Giggles and Denthe..........they will look fab hung together.
ReplyDeleteHappy PPF, Annette x

I like the arrangement of them in the photo and would almost hang them that way, the waterscape on top and the shoreline on the bottom -- it looks like the light has swum to shore :) Very beautiful work.
ReplyDeleteLovely to have a commission. Wonderful seascape....exciting things. Happy PPF
ReplyDeleteBoth are quite lovely seascapes and the two together compliment each other and on the contrary, the difference in the two make for interest and novelty to the art display; each is lovely in it's own way.
ReplyDeleteCongrats n the commission, always makes an artist feel appreciated.
Enjoy the creative journey.
